Abstract

Hydrogen-based energy could in certain situations be able to cope with the challenges involved with the energy transition in the built environment in the Netherlands. This thesis investigates how regime level stakeholders could facilitate pilots and upscaling of hydrogen-based energy in the Netherlands. Hydrogen-based energy is positioned as an option that is based in a deeply complex and uncertain context, in which it is unclear what technology will be applied in each neighbourhood. By the means of a document analysis and sem-istructured interviews with stakeholders involved in the initiative of Nijstad-Oost in Hoogeveen, it is found out that a more integrative perspective on the energy transition is necessary, that TSOs have a key role a socially acceptable execution of the energy transition and that a long-term vision allocated with appropriate resources are key points in the facilitation of hydrogen-based energy, both for the built environment and in general.
