Abstract

This thesis elaborates on the ''Centrumvisie Uithuizen'', a planning project in the municipality of Eemsmond in the province of Groningen. The project aims to redevelop the centre of Uithuizen because it is perceived as unattractive and inhospitable. The aim of the study was to find out to what extent there is a conflict or a consensus between the municipality of Eemsmond and the inhabitants of Uithuizen regarding the Centrumvisie project. Research was done by using qualitative and quantitative primary data. The main topics were Heritage, Centre Development and Citizen Participation. An outcome of the research is that there is a consensus about the need for improvement of centre of Uithuizen. However, on smaller scale there seem to be conflicting interests. The inhabitants and the municipality find different elements important and the inhabitants are not satisfied with the participation process.
