Abstract

Dealing with climate change is one of the biggest challenges for cities in the coming years, probably even for decades and cities have to cope with heavy rainfall and floods. In order to withstand floods, in this case flooding after sustained heavy rain, cities embraced the concept of resilience. Resilience in flood management becomes a societal task that calls for cross-disciplinary collaboration and as well as the willingness of citizens to actively participate. Therefore, in what way is public participation part of planning regarding the increase of the rainwater retention capacity? This research connects theory and practice regarding public participation and reveals how to interpret and incorporate public participation in planning regarding the increase of the rainwater retention capacity.
