Abstract

The global energy transition, in line with increased governance capacity for the local level, brings several challenges. This research focusses on local civic sustainable place-based developments. Dimensions addressed in this research are; how energy cooperatives are organized, how they collaborate with (governmental) actors, what the geographical influence on cooperatives is and how they take the lead to reach desired goals. Cooperatives in the Dutch provinces Drenthe, Friesland and Groningen were analyzed. One conclusion is that rural initiatives are more successful than urban initiatives.
