Abstract

The thesis examines the effect that the application of a survival strategy has on educational results of second generation migrants of Turkish and Moroccan descent. The application of a survival strategy is part of the human ecology theory by Ogbu that states that minorities react in different ways to the educational system that is in place in the host society. Ogbu argues that when the educational systems in place are perceived to be or are discriminatory towards minorities, the minorities will tend to apply an oppositional approach towards integrating in the educational system. Second generation migrants applying an oppositional approach, contrary to an instrumental approach, will look outside the educational systems in place to achieve success and will invest less in formal education and therefor reach lower educational results. The models do not show enough evidence to conclude that there is a clear link between survival strategy and educational results.
