Abstract

This study explores the perceptions of both teachers and parents from different cultural backgrounds on the guidance of a student during his or her social and cognitive development, in the context of a Dutch Highschool. Five parents and five teachers participated in in-depth interviews. The data revealed that he perceptions of parents and teachers correspond concerning the importance of social as well as cognitive development and the importance of communication among parents and teachers. Contradictions in perceptions occur concerning the focus on academic results and the expectations parents and teachers have of the student and one another. Themes on which parents and teachers have contradictory perceptions could find their origin in cultural backgrounds. When parents and teachers share their perception it cannot be concluded that these are embedded in their cultural background.
