Abstract

Europe is increasingly becoming discontent. In this research, an indicator has been developed that captures the extent of discontent perceived among individuals in Europe. This indicator is based on values and attitudes expressed in the European Social Survey 2018. Trust in national and European institutions appear to be a vital driver behind this indicator. Using regression analysis, it becomes clear how poorer individuals, in poorer regions, with a poorer development over the past 10 years, are more discontent compared to wealthier individuals and places.
