Abstract

This research paper examines the added value of 'serious gaming' on public participation in spatial planning processes, by means of a literature review and in depth interviewing as a primary data collection method. As it is a single case study, the case is the Twente airport - area development plan, wherein over 30 public organizations jointly developed a alternative plan without an airport, trough the use of the T-Xchange serious game. Multiple effects of features of serious games toward characteristics of public participation were found. Especially interaction and collaboration, together with knowledge building, seemed to benefit from the use of such a serious game as an innovative tool to involve public actors within a spatial planning process
