Abstract
The issue of a lack of social cohesion on the neighbourhood level nowadays becomes striking for big European cities. Many countries are experiencing various problems related to this issue - cultural segregation, lack of communication and neighbourhood mistrust. Policy-makers make an attempt to address these problems by introducing new programmes of the neighbourhood development. This Master Thesis research tries to investigate if these issues can be addressed by a self-regulated organization of cohousing projects. This is done through the application of Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of habitus and the forms of capital. The habitus of the cohousing residents and its relation to the adjacent neighbourhood is studied and identified. Also, the research seeks for a possibility to integrate cohousing initiatives into the social cohesion policy procedures. The study considers Berlin cohousing projects (Baugemeinschaften) and the Berlin Senate Socially Integrative City programme for the case-study.
