Abstract
In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in the European identity. Most studies in the field of European identity have focused on characteristics such as age, gender and occupational position (Pichler, 2008). Whilst some research has been carried out on the European Capitals of Culture, there is a relative paucity of studies investigating the impact of these European mega-events on the European identity. This paper analyses the impact of hosting the European Capital of Culture on the sense of European citizenship among the residents in the case of Leeuwarden. The central research question in this research is as follows: Does a European mega-event as the Capital of Culture in Leeuwarden influence the sense of European citizenship among the citizens in comparison to the citizens of Groningen?
