Abstract

Global temperatures are on the rise, and this has consequences on the quality of life in cities. Much of the current housing-stock and the urban environment are ill-equipped to face the increasing burden of heat stress. A range of adaptation measures are currently being developed and implemented in Groningen, but a lot can be learned from cities from the arid regions of the world. Where Groningen focuses mostly on greening the city through green roofs and improved parks, Phoenix and Dubai also promote 'cool roofs', improved building arrangements and orientation, and improved advective cooling.
