Abstract
Cardiovascular disease will be the leading cause of death in the Netherlands in the near future. 90% of CVD mortality can be attributed to nine modifiable risk factors. The mortality caused by CVD varies significantly throughout the North of the Netherlands. In order to reduce the CVD mortality rate in the North of the Netherlands it is important to know what the underlying cause is within the region. This study aims to determine whether or not the variation in CVD mortality can be explained by a selection of the modifiable risk factors. With the aid of linear regression an attempt was to determine if the following factors contributed to the CVD mortality rate; high blood pressure, overweight, diabetes, cholesterol, smoking and physical inactivity. Only blood pressure resulted in a significant outcome, the remaining variables were insignificant. The results do however indicate that there is considerable regional variation in the factors.
