Abstract

Sea-level rise is a much-discussed topic nowadays. In the case of the Netherlands there are negative consequences to sea-level rise. For example, the Dutch Wadden Islands, home to a lot of Dutch people, are surrounded by the sea. Those areas of the Netherlands could be endangered if the sea level rises. Literature shows that many people continue to live in risk areas, because the place attachment is high and often those regions have very fertile soil conditions. The aim of this research is to find out how aware Terschellingers are of their coastal defense. The level of awareness of inhabitants has a relation with how often hazards occur. In this case it would mean that the level of coastal defense awareness of Terschellingers is relatively low. The main research question to investigate this is: How aware are residents of Terschelling of their coastal defense?
