Abstract

Traffic safety and the means to improve it in harmony with sustainability in the urban environment, is an unsettling issue in our times and within this context, the topic of the present thesis was chosen, examining the street design of shared space and its effects. The prese nt research will be useful to those seeking insight on shared space, its origins and its connection to traffic safety. It contains a collection of the most important shared space cases in Europe and their results, along with a reflection on traffic safety development in cities that follow the street design of separating road users. The objective of the thesis is to examine whether traffic safety can be improved with the integration or separation of different types of traffic and under which conditions. On top of that, the case of the Municipality of Kalamaria in Greece is studied, exploring the possibility of a shared space implementation in it.
