Abstract

This study examines the economic impact of the University of Zaragoza (Spain). Nowadays universities play an important role in the regional development. Universities are no longer regarded only as institutions for education and research but are also recognized as important regional economic actors as well. The University of Zaragoza contributes in several ways significantly to the economic development of the region. With high numbers of direct and indirect employment, local expenditures and the supply of high educated the university is directly responsble for an economic impuls in the city of Zaragoza where it is located. Further is the university by far responsible for the largest share of the total number of R&D activities in the region. The university uses their knowledge in various (innovative) ways and it has a close relationship with the local industry.
