Abstract

This study looks at the timing of first and second births among four groups: native Estonians, first and second generation immigrant Russians in Estonia, and the Russians in Russia. Estonia provides an interesting case where immigration processes occurred slightly earlier than in other Western European countries, and the country has a relatively large foreign-origin population. The aim of the study is to test effects of migration on fertility. The hypotheses tested in this paper concern long-term demographic development. The Generations and Gender Survey data used in this paper provides an opportunity to analyse all four groups with comparable data from two countries. Cox regression models of timing of first conception and time interval between first and second birth are conducted, including male and female respondents, born between 1924 and 1983, living in urban areas. Covariates include sex, birth cohort, educational attainment, type of region of origin and timing of migration.
