Abstract

Objective: The present study aims to assess factors (endowment and conversion factors) that influence Indonesian mothers to practice breastfeeding, exclusively or not exclusively during the first three days of infants’s lives. Methods: This study applied the capability approach framework. The data source derived from The IDHS’12. Seventeen variables were examined using descriptive analysis and logistics regression. Results: The most important endowment factors was biological factor. BF initiation explained around 35.2% variability (R2) of EBF and non-EBF practices among Indonesian mothers. Mothers who initiated breastfeeding later were less likely to practice EBF. As for the conversion factors, when the interaction of region and residence exist: the likelihood of EBF practices decreased for mothers who lived in the urban and western regions of Indonesia. Conclusions: Several endowment and conversion factors significantly and positively/ negatively affected the practice of EBF and non-EBF [i.e. biological factor (BF initiation) and the environmental factor (region by residence)].
