Abstract

The current car-based transport system is under pressure by environmental and social problems related to mass car use. These problems make it necessary to identify what can be done to reduce the car dependency. The overall aim is to provoke a transition towards a more sustainable, less car dependent, transport system. This study explores the Italian car dependency more in-depth, and also the implementation of sustainable mobility niches. These are the development of soft mobility, collective mobility, cleaner mobility and car restrictions. The barriers are caused by car dependency itself, which are a car-oriented style of land-use, urban sprawl and the existence of a car culture. The study finally aims to identify opportunities to overcome these barriers and set the transition into motion.
