Abstract

The last ten years, populism has developed itself into one of the most prolific ways of practicing politics. Its influence has grown rapidly, and does not seem to slow down in the near future. Charismatic political leaders on the right are dominating the public debate, but what are the causes of this new anti-establishment sound? And what are the correlations between populism and measurable geographic trends on a regional scale? This thesis focusses on the correlation between several spatial features and the growth of antiestablishment populism in the eastern rural part of Groningen (ERG).
