Abstract

This study explores and describes the experiences of subjective wellbeing by people diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus and their significant other. Emphasis was placed on the relationship between subjective wellbeing and the self-management of diabetes which is influenced by the concepts coping, health literacy, and social support. By gaining a better understanding of how to reduce the risk of short-term and long-term complications from the experiences of people diagnosed with diabetes, negative consequences for the individuals as well as the costs of health care services may be reduced. This is a qualitative study and data was collected through the method of in-depth interviews with 16 participants throughout the Netherlands of which nine are diagnosed with T2DM, two are diagnosed with T1DM, and five are significant others.
