Abstract

The enrolment in higher education in Spain has followed an upward trend since the outbreak of the Great Recession in 2008. Since we know that not all sections of the Spanish population are being affected equally by the economic crisis, the main objective of this research is to find out how different socio-economic characteristics have affected the enrolment in higher education. The variables used have been chosen from the data pertaining to the Barometer March 2012 by the CIS from Spain. The dependent variable has been transformed into a dummy variable and the independent variables are related to some socio-economic characteristics of the parents of children studying in higher education or not. The method used for conducting the research is the logistic regression, controlling for the effect of provinces. According to the results obtained, this upward trend of enrolment in higher education is actually misleading for families with certain socio-economic characteristics.
