Abstract

McDonald theorized that a discrepancy in gender equity in individual level institutions and family oriented institutions leads to the low levels of fertility observed today. Here, this theory is tested on data of 17 different countries, using multilevel analysis. Furthermore, it is tested whether adding ‘gender ideology’ improves the theory.
