Abstract
This study examines the safety, attractiveness, and comfort of cycle routes by looking at planning processes of five fast cycle route projects in the Netherlands. Essentially, two questions are to be answered: how do practitioners interpret safety, attractiveness, and comfort? And how do they deal with the ambition-implementation dynamics within the prioritisation of these three principles throughout the process? With the help of planning documents and in-depth interviews, it is concluded that practitioners' interpretation is similar to theoretical views, although perceived safety is not considered as important in practice compared to theory. Furthermore, planning practitioners put a lot of effort into giving priority to these principles in the entire cycle route, by creating signed agreements, and having political guts, a no-nonsense strategy and persistence.
