Abstract

Currently the University of Groningen hosts only 37 Indian students. Therefore, policy to increase this number is necessary. Learning more about the level of academic integration of these students could help find policy implications. The following barriers for academic integration were derived from the literature: academic adjustment, social adjustment, personal-emotional adjustment and attachment. The level of academic integration is also determined by a set of attributes that a student has acquired before entering higher education. The results of the semi-structured interviews show that most students initially did encounter barriers to academic adjustment. However, these were overcome after a short stay in Groningen. An example is skills with using certain computer software. The language barrier tends to be a barrier for a longer time, as students do not learn a new language very quickly. This influences the social life of a student. Previously acquired attributes also influence a student’s academic integration.
