Abstract

The problem of marine macro plastic pollution is a diffuse issue. It is hard to trace where it originates. The thesis does address this by instead of looking at the plastic itself it searches for the human land based activities that are responsible for plastic pollution. The contribution to the problem of different sectors of land use has been determined by another study. The sectors are attributed with indicators and their spread along the municipalities at the Dutch Wadden sea coast is measured. This lead to the municipalities of Texel and Delfzijl being identified as hotspots for pollution. The second part of the research focuses on the role industrial port operations does have in macro plastic pollution. In order to find out an interview with the Port Authority was conducted that helped in signifying how ports can contribute and how this pollution can be addressed.
