Abstract

Conventional industrial agriculture and its negative impacts on the environment are becoming apparent for which the literature suggests cultivation alternatives such as agroecology. This study investigates the possibilities and challenges of agroecology as a solution for sustainable agriculture as a result of the associated climate impact of industrialized farms. In this case study, semi-structured interviews were conducted with agricultural practitioners and planners to chart challenges and possibilities on industrial farms for the adoption of agroecology, and to what extent agroecological development is supported by the institutional context. The analysis shows that barriers to adoption are complications with mechanization, high costs for personnel and expensive land, low production capacity, and uncertain output channels for agroecological products. Possibilities for adoption are strengthening crop protection, preventing soil erosion, application on low productive soils, and the application of robots in practice. Concerning institutional context, unfit regulations, exclusion from basic CAP payments, and restrictions on agricultural land use were identified as barriers. Institutions support agroecology development by knowledge networks and pilots, also found was the desire for inclusion in decision making among farmers. Suggested for development are intersectoral partnerships, payment for ecosystem services, financial incentives for agroecosystem transitions, and tailored landscape design.
