Abstract

There is a growing awareness of the importance of children's participation in projects that affect them. The development of social infrastructure is an example of such a project where children's participation is key. Within Groningen there have been a few cases where children were able to participate in a project, however, in most cases, children are still not involved or not participating in a way that gives them any power. Therefore, the research question of this research is: “How can children participate in the planning and design of recreational areas in the city of Groningen?”. Qualitative research, consisting out of 4 semi-structured interviews shows that to have children successfully participating in the planning and design of social infrastructure, there needs to be an awareness about the importance of children’s participation and there needs to be more knowledge about different participatory approaches and the different methods and tools that can be used.
