Abstract

The food crisis in 2008 resulted in global pressure on food and water resources. In response, investors increased their investments in inexpensive yet fertile land. However, their large-scale agricultural projects affect local communities. This study examines a case study of Gambela, southwest Ethiopia, which is home to the Anuak peoples. This research investigates the social impacts of land and water grabs by the private company Saudi Star Agricultural Development PLC (Saudi Star) on Anuak people in Gambela. Through qualitative research, using both primary and secondary data, the following research question is answered: ‘’What are the social impacts of operations by Saudi Star Agricultural Development PLC on Anuak people in Gambela, Ethiopia?’’. Moreover, a literature review is combined with five semi-structured interviews. The results show that the Anuak experienced negative social impacts of the operations by Saudi Star. Not performing a Social Impact Assessment seems to have significant consequences on the Anuaks living in Gambela. First, the people are restricted to only a few hectares of land; this resulted in food security concerns. Additionally, the arrival of Saudi Star led to a livelihood change since ancient traditions are disrupted. Moreover, an increase in conflicts and violence is another result of the operations by Saudi Star. However, the most discussed consequence in the literature is the displacement of tens of thousands of Anuak people under the guise of the villagization program. Based on the conclusions, conducting a Livelihood Restoration Plan is an effective way to limit the social impacts of the operation by Saudi Star on the Anuak. Moreover, empowering and involving this indigenous group in the operations of Saudi Star can help to alleviate negative social impacts.
