Abstract

Evidence supports a link between pedestrian mobility and healthier cities. Easy-to-use methodologies for measuring walkability are needed to take advantage of available pedestrian mobility information, such as the relationship to infrastructure, and influences on mobility choices. Based on literature, a composite walkability index that measures factors such as functionality, diversity, comfort, and perceived safety is proposed. The viability of the walkability index is tested on five streets in Bucharest, Romania.
