Abstract

This research explores possible social impacts of the proposed railway connection ‘Lelylijn’ running between Lelystad and Groningen on the city of Groningen. The main research question is “What are the potential social impacts of the infrastructure project ‘Lelylijn’ on the residents of the city of Groningen?”. By the way of two sub-questions the possible changes to the social impacts of the Lelylijn due to its history and its connection with the Deltaplan voor het Noorden are explored. In the theoretical framework possible social impacts are explored, as well as the possibility that cumulative impacts may occur from the current version of the Lelylijn, the history of the project, and through its connection with the Deltaplan. Through the use of semi-structured interviews with two experts and two residents, and through a questionnaire distributed under residents of Groningen, the potential effects tried to be identified. The largest potential impacts of the project are related to the potential economic growth it can facilitate and increase in accessibility of the city. Cumulative impacts on the housing market and accessibility may arise due to its connection with the Deltaplan and the projects stemming from the compensation of the cancellation of the Zuiderzeelijn respectively. The appearance from the questionnaire respondents and residents interviewed would be that the Lelylijn can rely on firm support from the public.
