Abstract
This paper investigates the relationship between the geographic proximity of rural communities to urban communities and the challenges faced by rural students attending urban higher level education. To do so, a comparison has been done between the USA and Northwestern Europe. The Netherlands and Germany act as samples for the larger region of Northwestern Europe. A literature review was conducted in order to establish which challenges rural students in the USA face when attending urban higher education. Through a quantitative analysis it was found that rural students in Northwestern Europe do not face the same challenges that rural students in the USA do. This was partially explained by conducting a geospatial analysis in which the percentage of land area and population which is proximate to urban regions was compared between the USA and The Netherlands. A discussion of the limitations of the current study and potential directions for further study are included in the penultimate section of this paper.
