Abstract

This research will look into the role of place branding and sustainable tourism development on Ameland. The research question of this paper is: ‘How do place branding and sustainable tourism development play a role in the ‘touristic ecosystem’ of Ameland? The tourism sector has grown to be the most important sector on Ameland. It leads to a driving economy and assures prosperity. However, success has a turning point and growth cannot go on forever. The ‘Toeristische Visie’ presents the tourism sector as a ‘touristic ecosystem’. It is a system consisting of biotic and abiotic processes and actors with different interests and beliefs. There needs to be a balance to keep the ecosystem intact. Results show that place branding strategies and sustainable tourism play a considerable role in the ‘touristic ecosystem’ of Ameland. Marketing of the island’s natural- and cultural values is important as well as marketing in the form of employee recruitment. The capacity of the island needs to be taken into account in place branding. Sustainable tourism focus on preserving the natural- and cultural landscape. Interests of organizations differ. Therefore, integrated communication between organizations is important.
