Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relationships between well-being, the COVID-19 pandemic, and public spaces, with a focus on Bulwary Wiślane in Warsaw, Poland. As public spaces play a fundamental role in socialization and health, the pandemic negatively impacted mental well-being due to isolation measures. The research problem is the lack of attention to how public environments influence well-being, though high-quality spaces can improve mental health and social cohesion. A theoretical framework examines definitions of public space and mental health, their relationship, and the pandemic's impact. An inclusive healthy places framework and conceptual model guide the assessment. Mixed methods including observations and questionnaires at Bulwary Wiślane assess physical characteristics, social cohesion, accessibility, safety, and their influence on well-being. The research questions examine how design shapes use, the public space-mental health link, quality ratings, and adapting spaces to promote mental health. The study aims to provide insights into supporting well-being through public space design.
