Abstract

In modern days there are many different modes of transport available to humankind, some of them are active but most of them are motorized. Even though this is necessary to cross large distances, the current society tends to walk less and less. Walking satisfaction is an important factor in people’s behavior toward walking. Groningen, being the first Dutch city to see that there is a need to remove car usage in the city center, and prioritize walking and cycling makes it a great walking city. But what factors influence walking satisfaction in the city center of Groningen? In order to find out a survey was conducted and correlation tests were performed to answer this question. These tests show that especially the physical built environment factors like; land use and pedestrian facilities and comfort were important for the walking satisfaction in the city center. But the other neighborhoods, especially the Schildersbuurt shows that the visual build environment factors like; imageability, human scale, transparency, and complexity is also important for walking satisfaction. The perceived safety regarding car traffic in the city center is also an important factor that increases walking satisfaction. Knowing which factors influence walking satisfaction might help policy makers into making decisions on what aspects to focus on when trying to improve walking satisfaction. To find the actual influence of each factor on walking satisfaction, it might be better to compare two areas that are closely identical, but only differentiate from one or two visual or physical built environment factors or do a qualitative study to get a deeper understanding of how people perceive these factors and how it influences their walking satisfaction.
