Abstract
The Dutch Wadden Sea is threatened by sea level rise, resulting in increased erosion, storm surges and salinization. Implementing further protective measures is essential and will likely have significant impact on the island’s physical landscape. This study evaluates the perceived impact of sixteen coastal protection measures & three Deltaprogramma strategies on Schiermonnikoog’s identity, safety from sea level rise, and five specified spatial qualities. Data regarding the perceptions of visitors and residents have been collected through a survey. Respondents were asked to identify the most important spatial qualities for Schiermonnikoog’s identity. measures were categorized into three groups: 1) Dike measures, 2) Dune measures, and 3) Freshwater measures, designated as a nature-based solutions, and assigned to one of three Deltaprogramma strategies. The study revealed notable patterns in the perceived impacts of coastal protection measures, including a positive perception of the strategy of protecting the current coastline among both residents and visitors. However, individual measures assigned to this strategy were not perceived most positively out of the three strategies. The individual measures assigned to strategy of moving seaward were perceived most positively, despite the overarching Deltaprogramma strategy scoring the lowest out of all three strategies. The most positively perceived measures did not align with most important spatial qualities, as several highly rated measures impacted key qualities negatively.
