Abstract

The neighbourhood as term is interpretable in multiple ways. Residents of a neighbourhood seem to experience the neighbourhood very different from how the neighbourhood officially is administered. This may have consequences for professionals who often work within the administered boundaries of a neighbourhood. The neighbourhood is a place where reidents develop a place identity. The place identity of residents of Enschede consist of four indicators: The sense of 'feeling at home', the process of identity-making, change, and meaninfull experiences. The identity-making process is steered by 'others', which are used as positive or negative influencers for the identity of the self. Changes in (for example) these 'others' may lead to a change in place identity. Moreover, meaningful experiences may also lead to changes in place identity. Meaningful experiences occur in different stages of life. All these four factors together determine a person's place identity. Identity and 'othering' processes are most influential herein.
