Abstract

This thesis discusses the integration of the dog into the urban environment of Groningen. According to the organisation Hondvriendelijk Groningen (2013) there are 10.000 dogs living in the urban environment of Groningen. Around six percent of the households do have a dog. This significant population of dogs will require planners to rethink how the urban environment should be planned when dogs do matter. A way to integrate the dog and his owner is to give them access to public open spaces. At the heart of this situation is the question on what the benefits and limitations are of an inclusion of dogs to public open spaces. And when there is such an inclusion how this can be achieved. This research demonstrates that the inclusion of the dog in the public realm has several benefits but also limitations.
