Abstract

This research is about the differences between tourists’ perceptions of the Israel-Palestine conflict before they arrive in Israel, and while they are there. The data is analysed with the aid of tourist gaze theory (Urry, 1991). The tourist gaze consists of 5 categories: ‘daily life activities’, ‘signs’, ‘senses’, ‘unique elements’ and ‘unique objects’. The most important findings: 68% of the respondents had a clear perception of the Israel-Palestine conflict before they visited Israel and while visiting Israel. This perception was mainly based on the following categories of tourist gaze: ’signs’, ‘senses’ and ‘daily life activities’.
