Abstract
The objectives of this study are twofold: to gain insight into the normative framework set out for academic researchers working in the Dutch context, and to explore how register researchers working in the Netherlands approach the research ethics of working with human data. A qualitative mixed method approach was employed, in which the findings of a content analysis of academic research ethics guidelines, and a thematic analysis of semi-structured in-depth interviews with register researchers were combined. The findings indicate that the norms set out in academic guidelines generally provide a suitable framework to understand researchers’ perceptions and attitudes towards research ethics, but also reveal how researchers practice research ethics through additional strategies. The developed inductive conceptual model forms a solid base for future research, as it provides valuable insights on the practices register researchers working in the Netherlands apply to protect the interests of those included in register datasets.
