This thesis focuses on exploring young Lebanese adults’ Sense of Place in relationship to the Massaad stairs located in one of Beirut’s ‘hip’ neighbourhoods, Mar Mikhael. It explores what they do, what they think, and how they feel towards these stairs as a public place. This qualitative research was conducted in Beirut where thirteen walk-along interviews were held on site with young Lebanese adults. In addition to that, visual data was collected to observe how the stairs are used and for which purpose. First, young adults’ behaviour proves to be dependent on the time, the day of the week, and where they choose to sit along the stairs. While there, they indulge in drinking practices due to the proximity to the pubs and alcohol vendors. Second, at an emotional level, since other public spaces in Beirut are given diminutive recognition and accessing them is becoming increasingly challenging, the stairs are considered a relatively safe place due to the presence of people but this perceived safety differs between genders. Also, young adults feel that the space can be used as a platform for expression. Last, at a cognitive level, results show that these young adults perceive the stairs as a social arena that helps them connect to the dynamics of the city, which are, at the same time, used as an ‘urban escape’.
