China is the top exporter of international students worldwide, with Western countries often being the most attractive destinations. However, due to the large cultural differences between Western and Asian educational environments, adjustment is thought to be particularly challenging for this group of international students. The aim of this research is to examine the challenges of Chinese students? academic adjustment through a case study at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. By the means of semi-structured in-depth interviews with Chinese students and institutional experts, differences between the culture of higher education in China and the culture of higher education in the Netherlands are identified, as were additional transitional issues, including language barriers and time management.
