The problems are the shortage of proper student housing and the idea that investing in student housing leads to a negative neighbourhood image. We operationalise the (re)development of student housing complexes by combining data about the neighbourhoods and the (re)development projects. In our main results, there exists a positive effect on nearby property prices resulted from the (re)development of a vacant plot into a student housing complex. The appreciation in price is, however, decreasing in distance and also in time. The findings advance the existing hedonic studies by verifying that the (re)development of vacant plots leads to economic benefits of living near to a (re)developed student housing complex. This has implications for governmental policies regarding the investment in student housing in general.
