TY - THES N2 - This research studies the complex two-way relationship between social capital and grassroot urban agriculture in the city of Groningen. With the help of GIS-data and in-depth interviews with different stakeholders and initiators of food projects, this study gives insights into the interplay of these concepts. The research shows that the relationship between social capital and the development and maintenance of the urban food system in Groningen is one that is strongly correlated and the two concepts have a reinforcing impact. The overall impact of the food projects on social capital is very positive, although the dangers of inclusion and exclusion should be considered. Differences in success rate are associated with the neighborhood the projects are set up in, although other external factors such as the role of the municipality and the capacity of the initiator should be considered in these grassroot projects.
