Consequently, contemporary planning approaches have to be reconsidered. This thesis aims to do so by looking into the concept of Utopia and finding out what the impacts of contemporary Utopias are on people, places and plans. By conceptualising Utopia in relation to planning, and looking into the ways in which it can have influence, it tries to find out what role Utopias play in planning practice of today. Based on twelve cases of Dutch Utopias, this thesis concludes that there is great merit to considering Utopias in planning and that it offers possibilities for better ways of developing places.
