"Increasing levels of humanity has led to a degree of noise exposure that is considered as invasive environmental pollution. In the Netherlands the importance of sound relating to the perceived quality of the living environment remains underexposed. Focus is on the regulatory approach. Yet the reduction of noise does not always lead to a positively perceived sound environment. This research investigated how the citizens of the Netherlands value their acoustic living environment and what we should change to come to a pleasant acoustic environment. Based on questionnaires it was concluded that a pleasant acoustic environment includes more than acoustical properties. The visual aspect, social cohesion and safety contribute to how it is perceived. Removing dominant hindering sound sources is only part of a solution. Silence is not the most desirable option. People do prefer the sounds of liveliness and to a certain degree accept the sounds belonging to a city."^^ . "2016" . . . . . . . "E.A. de"^^ . "Vries"^^ . "E.A. de Vries"^^ . . . . . .
