Such data is important, but also helps to reinforce misconception at community level which labels family planning and fertilty as a ‘female’s affair’. This qualitative research fills this gap by focusing on the perception of men from rural Malawi, about maternal health and male involvement in maternal health. The participants were very aware of the maternal death risk. Men are on the one hand supposed to take certain responsibilities in order to safeguard the lives of their wives. On the other hand they are hindered by community factors which creates a feeling of being excluded, an image that pregnant women are dangerous to men, that men lack knowledge regarding safe motherhood, and that some men are negligent towards supporting their wives. The participants mentioned male clubs as a promising intervention to increase male involvement. date: 2011 type: Thesis type: NonPeerReviewed format: text language: en identifier: https://frw.studenttheses.ub.rug.nl/180/1/Annex_1b_and_1d_-_Guides_-_Eng_2.pdf format: text language: en identifier: https://frw.studenttheses.ub.rug.nl/180/2/Annex_2b_2d_3b_3d_-_guides_-_C_3.pdf format: text language: en identifier: https://frw.studenttheses.ub.rug.nl/180/3/Master_Thesis_Dyon.pdf identifier: Hoekstra, D.
