Such data is important, but also helps to reinforce misconception at community level which labels family planning and fertilty as a ‘female’s affair’. This qualitative research fills this gap by focusing on the perception of men from rural Malawi, about maternal health and male involvement in maternal health. The participants were very aware of the maternal death risk. Men are on the one hand supposed to take certain responsibilities in order to safeguard the lives of their wives. On the other hand they are hindered by community factors which creates a feeling of being excluded, an image that pregnant women are dangerous to men, that men lack knowledge regarding safe motherhood, and that some men are negligent towards supporting their wives. The participants mentioned male clubs as a promising intervention to increase male involvement. date: 2011 date_type: published thesis_type: master degree_programme: RS tutors_name: Hutter, Prof. Dr. I. tutors_name: Bailey, Dr. A. keywords_local: Safe Motherhood keywords_local: Sub-Saharan Africa keywords_local: Rural Communities keywords_local: Malawi keywords_local: Community Based Research keywords_local: Male Involvement keywords_local: Maternal Health keywords_local: Qualitative Research language_iso: en titleorder: We need Uchembere Wabwino Wabambo (Safe Motherhood for Men)”: A Qualitative Study about the Perceptions of Men in Rural Malawi about Maternal Health and Male Involvement in Maternal Health dbi: 4ef1ecebc9492 imported_item: yes date_of_import: 2020-04-22 imported_from: http://scripties.frw.eldoc.ub.rug.nl/root/ma/RS/2011/dhoekstra/ import_source_file: theses-frw-20200422132453-4ef1ecebc9492.xml date_issued: 2011-01-01 citation: Hoekstra, D.
