Methods: Cross- sectional time- series analysis (between, mixed and random effects models), checking the association between income inequality and mortality for mediation. Results: Income inequality is positively related to mortality in between effects models. In fixed and random effects models the association has no single direction. Generally, the effects of inequality are more often positive/ more strongly positive when control variables are included and also for males’ and external- cause mortality. Perceiving conflicts between the rich and poor meets the requirements for mediating variable only in between and random effects models. Conclusions: When countries are compared higher inequality is related to higher mortality but the increasing mortality in an individual country is not necessarily linked to higher mortality. Overall, the association is dubious. date: 2012 date_type: published thesis_type: master degree_programme: POPST tutors_name: Kibele, E.U.B. keywords_local: external causes of death keywords_local: health inequalities keywords_local: mortality keywords_local: income distribution keywords_local: economic inequality keywords_local: public health keywords_local: cross- sectional time- series analysis language_iso: en titleorder: Economic inequality and public health: evidence from 14 countries dbi: 503f3674238c3 imported_item: yes date_of_import: 2020-04-22 imported_from: http://scripties.frw.eldoc.ub.rug.nl/root/ma/PopSt/2012/gmorkute/ import_source_file: theses-frw-20200422132453-503f3674238c3.xml date_issued: 2012-01-01 citation: Morkute, G.
