Indigenous peoples and their cultures are under pressure. Tourism introduces new goods, values and techniques which might have an influence in traditional societies. This thesis explores the impact of tourism on the culture of one of these indigenous peoples: The Maasai. The main question is as follows: How is the Maasai culture influenced by tourism? This research has a case-study approach and focuses on the Maasai village of Ole Keene near the Maasai-Mara National Reserve, Kenya. The Maasai became dependent on the money from tourists. The daily activities which shape their lifestyle are changing and different compared to the traditional lifestyle. The Maasai culture got commodified. However, the cultural meanings stay the same. Furthermore, the Maasai see the introduced western goods and values as an added value for their own culture.
