title: Political Opportunity Structures of Civil Society Movements: a research on the Island of Schiermonnikoog

abstract: With a growing environmental crisis in the world sustainable ways of living are becoming urgent. While this urgency is being addressed by researchers, governmental and organisational actions are oftentimes still focused on economic gains instead of creating a sustainable alternative. The result is a rise of civil society movements and organisations to undertake collective action, oftentimes caused by NIMBY-incentives. Also, it is known that relationships to external actors and the structure of a society – so-called opportunity structures – influences the rise, development and impact of movements. This thesis uses the case study of Schiermonnikoog, media- and documentary analysis and interviews to understand the interaction of opportunity structures and strategies in citizen protest. This research shows that the perception of the protesters plays an important role in the way their strategies are influenced by political opportunities and how the opportunity structures interact with each other.
